4.2 - Fiction Template
Introduction:
This Template is to be used for all print Fiction titles,
including standard and large print editions, and English and LOTE items.
Specific instructions for LOTE items may be found under Topic 4.18.
When adding new record use the following values:
· Format = MARC
· Entries Template = TEMPLATE
a) Use the same template for Large print fiction, Foreign language (LOTE) fiction and change the fixed fields accordingly.
b) GMD – Standard print works must have no GMD. Libraries Victoria GMDs would be applied for non-standard print format titles. A full list of GMDs can be found in Section 4.1.8 of the Operations Guide.
For Bookclub and Graphic Novel titles, see the
relevant template topics in this document.
c) Fiction
hardback editions/imprints and Fiction Paperback editions/imprints with the
same content in the body of the work, are to go on one record. Add additional
ISBNs to the 2nd or subsequent 020 tag. Leave imprint & collation details
as for original record. Do not include a note such as Paperback ed. published
200- .
d) 245 tag – n and p subfields to be added if necessary by individual libraries.
e) 336/337/338 tags - Content, Media and Carrier Type tags are
validated fields. Select the appropriate entry from the field/subfield entries
provided.
336 ## text|2rdacontent
337 ## unmediated|2rdamedia
338 ## volume|2rdacarrier
f) 490/830 tags –
If downloading a Libraries Australia (LA)
record which has a fictitious character tag, don’t delete it, but add a 490/830
series.
Some LA records have series entries in the 245 tag – for consistency, remove them from the title and put them into the 490/830 tags.
For local records, add 490/830 tags
For records loaded via SmartPort or Bibload,
remove 440 tags and add 490/830 tags.
There will be some discrepancies in punctuation
and order of subfields of records (eg. |p and |n) which are downloaded. Leave
as is, this will not affect the searching and finding of series.
Omit the initial articles A, An and The for the
830 tag.
Example:
490
1# |aThe teenage years
830
#0 |aTeenage
years.
Examples
of series entries:
490
1# Harry
Potter series ;|v2 (note: no fullstop)
830
#0 Harry

Stage 2, Sea stories ;|v15

830
#0 Sea

The addition of 490/830 tags for the Premiers’
Reading Challenge titles is optional. If creating series entry use the
following format with the applicable year levels: Prep, Year 1 and Year 2, Year
3 and Year 4 etc. As Victoria and NSW have different Premier’s Reading
Challenge lists, the state should also be identified in the series entry. e.g.
“VIC Premiers’ Reading Challenge Prep, Year 1 and Year 2”; “NSW Premier’s
Reading Challenge Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2”. Confirm that any PRC entries
listed are on your state’s Reading Challenge list and update the record
accordingly.
g) 650 tag – Fiction subject headings is optional.
h) 655 tag -- Fiction genre subject headings are optional. When adding records, 655
_0 coding will be used. The coding in downloaded records from SmartPort will be
left in even if different coding is used.
a) If
there are only minor subtitle differences, such as ‘a novel’, add all copies to
the same bib record.
b) If
there is a substantial subtitle difference, retain the original bib record and
add a 500 note ‘Also published as …’
then add either a 246 or 740 tag for added title.
For classic novels, ignore forewords, notes,
etc and add to an existing bib record. Add the new 020 tag to the existing
record. Delete details relating to forewords and notes from the 245 tag.
Different translations of the same title are
not sufficiently important to merit a separate bib record. Treat as duplicates.
If the order of joint authors varies on different
imprints of the same title, disregard and treat the imprints as duplicates.
a) Where
a children’s book has been republished with the same text but with minor
illustrations by a different illustrator, treat as a duplicate and add the
second ISBN to the first bib record. Do not make any mention of the second
illustrator.
b) Where
a children’s book (eg fairy tale) has illustrations that are a major element of
the work, create/download a separate bib record with the appropriate details
for the illustrator
c) Where
a work has been published in a different form eg a novel republished as a
graphic novel, or a picture book as a board book, create/download a separate bib record for the new form.
d) Libraries
Australia records contain inconsistencies in the main entry of titles where
there are both fictional and real author statements on the title page. Leave LA
records as is. Add a 700 tag for the alternate author name if not included
already. Make the call number appropriate for your library’s requirements. e.g
author B Strange versus text by Tommy Donvaband.
· Dat_Tp – change to s (“Single known
date/probable date”)
· Fiction code – change to 1 (“Fiction – not
